Some Interesting Facts

Alvaro SHUMWAY was born on 11 APR 1838 in Kishwaukee, Winnebago Co., IL. He died on 15 NOV 1892 in Tacoma, WA.

Alvaro Shumway first walked into Lanark, Illinois on October 9th, 1861, the day after the town had "officially" been founded. This was, you'll remember, the first year of the "great unpleasantness" . . . . War Between the States. The "town" consisted of one shanty boarding house built by the railroad company to house its employees and a few of their favored visitors.

Mucking though a yet unharvested wheat field, Alvaro staked out what was to become his wooden building on the corner of Broad and Locust. He was married to Emily Adelia MANNING on 6 NOV 1861 in Mt. Carroll, IL.
